Botox
Botox is the trade name for botulinum toxin – a protein that blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. Botox is delivered via injections, and starts to work as it attaches itself to the nerve endings of the targeted muscles – usually within a few hours. Over a period of two to ten days, the Botox blocks the nerve transmitters to still the muscles, preventing them from contracting. Over time, facial lines and wrinkles relax and soften, and eventually diminish, leaving smoother skin. Botox works on “dynamic wrinkles”; wrinkles that exist because of the muscle moving beneath the skin.
The effects of Botox treatment can last for three to four months, depending on the amount injected, the metabolism of the patient, and their lifestyle or recreational activities. Side effects can occur – the more common include headaches, bruising, and some tenderness at the site of injection.
