Botox & Restylane
Rejuvenate with Botox and Restylane in Harrison, OH - Art of Smiles Dentistry
As we age, the creases caused by using our facial muscles to smile, laugh, and frown, gradually form permanent lines and wrinkles in the skin. This is seen most commonly around the eyes and mouth, between the eyebrows, and on the forehead. These lines can significantly alter your appearance, making you appear older, angry, tired or sad.
In order to combat these lines and furrows, non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments can effectively target affected areas. Two of the most successful, and also the most popular, are Botox and Restylane. Both tackle the effects of aging, but in different ways and with different results. Dr. Arel is happy to provide her Harrison patients with more information about wrinkle treatments using Botox and Restylane.
Botox is the trade name for botulinum toxin – a protein that blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. Botox is delivered via injections, and starts to work as it attaches itself to the nerve endings of the targeted muscles – usually within a few hours. Over a period of two to ten days, the Botox blocks the nerve transmitters to still the muscles, preventing them from contracting. Over time, facial lines and wrinkles relax and soften, and eventually diminish, leaving smoother skin. Botox works on “dynamic wrinkles”; wrinkles that exist because of the muscle moving beneath the skin.
The effects of Botox treatment can last for three to four months, depending on the amount injected, the metabolism of the patient, and their lifestyle or recreational activities. Side effects can occur – the more common include headaches, bruising, and some tenderness at the site of injection.
Restylane is a “filler” composed of hyaluronic acid. Another product designed to correct moderate to severe facial lines, folds and wrinkles, including the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth, known as nasolabial folds. Hyaluronic acid attracts water and will help nature to store water in the selected area. For this reason, Restylane is a popular choice for marionette lines, and often is used to enhance the lips.
Restylane is widely recognized as a safe treatment option. Common post-treatment side effects include redness and minor swelling. Any discomfort the patient may feel will subside within 48-72 hours.
